About

Readings first, opinions second

A small independent shop working on one kind of appliance: built-in refrigeration in Chicago kitchens that were designed around it.

Built-in refrigeration is not the same trade as general appliance repair. The cabinets are integrated into joinery, they run two cooling circuits, their controls will happily report a temperature the compartment is not at, and half of what looks like a failing compressor turns out to be a condenser with nowhere to breathe. Working on one kind of machine is what makes the diagnosis short.

So the visit is built around measurement rather than opinion. A probe goes on a shelf and stays there. Gauges go on the sealed system. The defrost circuit is metered rather than inferred from where the frost has settled. Then you get one figure, in advance, for the whole job.

The method

What we do, in the order we do it

  1. 01

Get the history before anything comes apart

Model and serial off the frame, what the cabinet is actually holding right now against what the panel claims, and what changed in the fortnight before you rang. Most of these faults are down to two candidates on that alone, and it costs nothing but a conversation.

  2. 02

Measure it, do not take the panel’s word for it

A probe on the shelf, gauges on the sealed system, the meter on the defrost circuit, airflow read at the evaporator and current draw at the compressor. A control that has lost a sensor will keep displaying a perfectly plausible number all afternoon.

  3. 03

One firm figure before a part is ordered

Parts and labour in a single number, agreed with you before anything is ordered or a panel comes further off. Nothing is replaced on suspicion, and nothing is opened up on the assumption you will say yes to whatever comes next.

  4. 04

Prove it holds before the van leaves

The cabinet is brought back down to spec while we are still standing in the kitchen and the readings are shown to you. A unit that is merely running again is not the same thing as a unit that is holding.

What is confirmed

And what we will not claim

Everything below is true and checkable. What you will not find anywhere on this site is a fix rate, a count of jobs completed, a number of years in the trade or a licence number printed for effect. Those are the figures a reader cannot verify, so they are not here.

Licensed, bonded and insured. We provide our licence number to customers on request.

  • EPA Section 608 certified

Federal certification for handling refrigerant, which is what any sealed-system work on these cabinets requires.

  • Factory-spec parts only

Replacement components ordered against your serial number. No pattern parts, no substitutions made quietly on the day.

  • Written diagnosis left behind

What was measured, what it means and what it will cost, on paper, whether or not you go ahead with the work.

  • Workmanship warranty

The repairs we carry out are warranted. If the same fault comes back, we come back to it.

Book

Describe the fault and we will tell you what it usually is

Most calls narrow to two candidates on the phone. If it is something you can settle yourself in ten minutes, we will say so rather than book a visit.
